Dr. Stephen
Hague was born in New Bedford, Massachusetts, the home of Melville's
Moby
Dick,
and the home of his mother's whaling Mayflower ancestors, the Howlands. He has also previously lived and taught in Pennsylvania,
the Peoples Republic of China, England, and Maryland. In his
academic work, he has completed a Bachelors (1981) and Masters in
English Literature (1983), a Masters in Old Testament (1989), a
Masters of Divinity (1991), and a Ph.D. in Old Testament Theology
(2001). His dissertation was on Pentateuchal theology, focusing on
the history of sanctuary theology regarding the presence of God in
the Book of Exodus. His interest in Old Testament studies includes
interdisciplinary work in the NT, literary and philosophical
studies, systematic theology, hermeneutics, and apologetics. He has
had cross-cultural ministry, study, and teaching experience in
mainland Chinese universities for two years (American and British
literature), in a Korean church for four years during seminary
(theology), at Wycliffe Hall in Oxford, England for three years
(doctoral research and studies), at
a preparatory college in
Oxford for one year (OT prophets). For some royal fun, Stephen was a
Tory with a red wig in the film The Madness of King George,
filmed at Oxford and Eton. Stephen also taught Biblical Hebrew at
Biblical Theological Seminary for two years, during which time he
taught Evening School courses in biblical subjects. During the
completion of his dissertation, he was a visiting professor of OT at
Reformed Theological Seminary in Washington DC and Charlotte, NC.
Most recently, he was the Dean of New Geneva Theological Seminary,
Baltimore Extension and Professor of Biblical Studies. He went to Kiev, Ukraine to teach a seminary course on the Life of
Christ
for the January winter term, 2005 and also went to Israel to teach
the Old Testament Prophets in the Summer of 2005.
Stephen has done
articles for The New International Dictionary of Old Testament
Theology and Exegesis, book reviews for The Journal of the
Evangelical Theological Society, The Journal of Biblical Literature,
The
Ashland Theological Journal,
and has a variety of writing projects in progress. Recently, he
completed a reference syllabus for students of the Old and New
Testaments. He also helped edit and publish the transcribed lectures
on the Pentateuch by Dr. Allan A. MacRae. His professional
associations include the Society of Biblical Literature, the
Evangelical Theological Society, and he is an Associate of the
Interdisciplinary Biblical Research Institute.
Stephen considers
his best decision in life was proposing to the pianist, Gloria
Hansen, who is now his wife and the mother of their three busy sons:
Julian, Marcus, and Lucas. They reside at 201 South
College Street, Carlisle, PA, and consider their home both a
family-haven and a center for hospitality. So, though they invite
you to visit, keep in mind that besides food and fellowship they
might also give you some chores with the boys, as one of the family.
